Lama Willa Blythe Baker is a meditation teacher at Natural Dharma Fellowship, a community in Springfield, New Hampshire, whose retreat center is Wonderwell Mountain Refuge. The fellowship describes its approach as natural meditation, inspired by the natural world.
She originally crafted the teachings of the fellowship's Margha Program. Margha means "path" in Sanskrit. The two-year program alternates between Natural Meditation and Bodhicitta, drawing on meditations adapted from traditional Himalayan Buddhist training. It is open to newcomers and to seasoned practitioners. Lama Liz Monson and visiting lamas now transmit these teachings at the program's retreats, and Mitras (spiritual friends and mentors) guide participants through the year.
Lama Willa also teaches in the fellowship's Natural Freedom Dzogchen Program, also called the Natural Freedom Sangha. The program combines study of the Dzogchen classics, sustained contemplative practice and community, and she leads its live online teaching and practice sessions, sometimes with a senior student or teacher. Of the sangha, the program page says she reminds the community: "We are here to weave deep relationships, nurture kindness, and find support for an ever-deepening discovery of awareness."
Worth Knowing
Lama Willa Blythe Baker is a PhD scholar and meditation teacher who founded Natural Dharma Fellowship in Springfield, New Hampshire, and its retreat center, Wonderwell Mountain Refuge. She originally created the core curriculum for the fellowship's teaching programs, which blend rigorous Buddhist scholarship with accessible contemporary practice. What distinguishes her among meditation teachers is her synthesis of Himalayan Buddhist traditions—specifically Dzogchen and Bodhicitta—with an approach called "natural meditation" that draws inspiration from the natural world. Students and practitioners follow her work because she bridges academic rigor with living contemplative practice, offering structured pathways for both newcomers and experienced practitioners to deepen their study and awareness. Her community-oriented teaching philosophy—expressed in her reminder that "we are here to weave deep relationships, nurture kindness, and find support for an ever-deepening discovery of awareness"—has attracted a dedicated sangha that gathers both online and at mountain retreats. The appeal lies less in charisma or quick spiritual outcomes than in the clarity of her programs and her willingness to do the demanding work of creating sustainable community structures for long-term Buddhist practice in North America.
