[0:00] we are subtly creating expectations all
[0:03] the time without even knowing it so when
[0:06] one of these unpredicted things happen
[0:09] our emotions go all over the place
[0:13] oh that wasn't meant to happen
[0:15] well you know what yes it was meant to
[0:17] happen and that's why it happened
[0:25] here are some of the common questions
[0:27] that get asked when we start talking
[0:30] about this Oneness
[0:33] spirituality
[0:35] and the relationship between the
[0:37] universe and us one of the most common
[0:40] questions
[0:41] that is always asked is if God is
[0:44] perfect
[0:45] then why do bad things happen
[0:48] if there is a God
[0:50] why does he allow
[0:52] the terrible things that we see in life
[0:54] the wars the natural disasters
[0:57] they
[0:58] loss of innocent lives
[1:00] why does that happen
[1:04] why do these things happen to me why do
[1:06] bad things happen to me
[1:08] are these in my destiny can I do
[1:11] something about it
[1:13] how do I overcome the struggles in my
[1:15] life how do I overcome emotional pain
[1:19] what do I do
[1:21] when I'm in an abusive relationship
[1:24] what do I do if I'm in a situation where
[1:27] I'm the victim of abuse where I'm in
[1:30] constant conflict with other people when
[1:32] I have bad relationships
[1:34] how do I forgive someone for the nasty
[1:36] things that they've done to me
[1:39] how do I deal with
[1:41] present traumas and past traumas
[1:45] I find it really interesting I get to
[1:48] meet a lot of people
[1:49] and sometimes very quickly when you
[1:52] speak to someone one of the first things
[1:54] that they tell you about is a trauma
[1:56] that they've been carrying for a really
[1:57] long time
[1:59] and I've seen that time and time again
[2:00] people come up to me and say hi my name
[2:02] is this I really like your talks your
[2:04] videos and all that and within a minute
[2:05] or two they start telling me about 10
[2:07] years ago my brother died
[2:10] or my father did this to me or something
[2:12] like that
[2:13] unprompted what that means is we all
[2:16] carry around these traumas and they
[2:19] become part of our identity they become
[2:21] one of the most prominent bricks that we
[2:24] label ourselves with this is who I am I
[2:27] am the guy who suffered this pain
[2:30] how do we start to overcome those past
[2:33] traumas how do we start to let go of
[2:35] those how do we deal with the death of
[2:37] loved ones
[2:39] what is in my control what is out of my
[2:43] control
[2:44] what is good and what is bad
[2:51] are there things that we can call good
[2:53] and bad in life
[2:59] how do I work with my Oneness and
[3:01] self-identity what am I supposed to do
[3:04] with all these things
[3:08] where do all these questions come from
[3:11] every single one of these questions
[3:13] comes from one place
[3:16] and it comes from a place of discomfort
[3:19] within you it comes from a place of pain
[3:25] inside you
[3:27] is a hurt
[3:30] a discomfort and when you feel that
[3:33] discomfort what you're saying is really
[3:35] how do I deal with that pain
[3:37] it may manifest in a whole bunch of
[3:40] different questions like we've talked
[3:41] about but really what we're saying is
[3:43] why does it hurt inside
[3:45] and what can I do about that hurt
[3:49] and this is the Crux of all spiritual
[3:53] knowledge
[3:55] if your spirituality and your religion
[3:58] don't help you deal with everyday life
[4:01] then it's absolutely meaningless
[4:04] there's no point to it
[4:07] if you don't know how to help yourself
[4:12] during difficult times if you don't know
[4:15] how to process
[4:18] the circumstances that are happening in
[4:20] your life your spirituality is just a
[4:22] waste of time because all it is is
[4:23] something that you do to keep yourself
[4:25] busy it's something that you identify
[4:27] with I'm a Sikh I'm a Hindu I'm a Muslim
[4:29] it's just a label that you put yourself
[4:32] into and because you belong to that
[4:34] label you do all the practices you dress
[4:36] a certain way you act a certain way you
[4:38] speak a certain way
[4:40] but really
[4:41] if you don't know how to deal with
[4:43] everyday stuff
[4:44] what is spirituality then it's just a
[4:46] costume
[4:48] and spirituality means I know how to
[4:52] live better
[4:54] I know
[4:56] I'm equipped with the tools to have a
[4:59] better way of living
[5:01] and I can share those
[5:05] so your spirituality is defined
[5:09] by how capable you are of dealing with
[5:11] day-to-day life
[5:13] and that's a very different definition
[5:15] of spirituality
[5:17] that's a very different definition of
[5:19] religion
[5:21] because you can be judged on the way you
[5:24] look you can be judged on the way you
[5:27] act you can be judged on whether you do
[5:31] the right things or eat the right things
[5:33] or say the right things
[5:36] but the only thing
[5:39] that you should judge yourself on is am
[5:42] I able to deal with everyday life
[5:45] that's your benchmark
[5:47] say is the stuff working for me or not
[5:52] and for you to live connected
[5:55] to this reality to this ultimate essence
[5:59] you have to change your relationship
[6:02] with your circumstances
[6:04] you have to learn to have a better
[6:05] relationship with the life that you're
[6:08] in
[6:09] and you have to have a better
[6:10] relationship with yourself
[6:14] And the emotions that you put yourself
[6:15] through
[6:20] so
[6:24] this wisdom
[6:27] is one that I want us to start
[6:29] understanding a little bit more
[6:30] suffering is to the mind what pain is to
[6:35] the body
[6:37] suffering is to the mind what pain is to
[6:39] the body what do we mean by that
[6:42] let's think about this scenario
[6:45] what is a healthy body
[6:48] a healthy body
[6:50] is when
[6:51] there's nothing going wrong on the
[6:53] inside everything is working
[6:56] and there's no external
[6:58] distractions nothing that's attacking
[7:01] you from the outside
[7:03] that's a healthy body you know that if
[7:05] your bits are all working properly it's
[7:07] fine and if everything else is
[7:09] there's no diseases or anything on the
[7:11] outside there's no problem what happens
[7:13] when you get ill
[7:15] yeah let's say your nose starts running
[7:18] let's say your foot starts hurting
[7:21] what's the first question that you ask
[7:23] yourself
[7:25] when you're ill when something starts
[7:27] happening I tell you what happens to me
[7:30] any kids anyone who's got kids in
[7:32] nurseries right you know as soon as you
[7:35] get a cold it's that kid's fault because
[7:38] they go to Nursery they touch a whole
[7:41] bunch of different things they pick up a
[7:43] whole bunch of germs they get ill like
[7:46] every other week and you know you have
[7:47] to deal with it so what happens when you
[7:49] get ill the first thing you do is you
[7:51] identify what's the root of that problem
[7:54] that I'm experiencing where is it coming
[7:56] from and almost always things don't just
[7:59] spontaneously happen actually when you
[8:01] start getting a little bit older things
[8:02] just start spontaneously breaking as
[8:04] well he said I made a good day and all
[8:06] that sort of stuff right right so your
[8:08] knees start hurting and things like that
[8:10] but in reality normal healthy lives
[8:13] sorry
[8:15] in reality normal healthy lives
[8:19] means that if you ever get ill you're
[8:22] able to straight away look for a cause
[8:25] and we do we like to know why like why
[8:27] am I ill sometimes it's someone else in
[8:29] the family or you just start making
[8:31] stuff up oh I think it was because I had
[8:33] something or it's because someone at
[8:35] work or something you'd like to know why
[8:37] am I ill okay
[8:40] we do this with the body
[8:43] but
[8:44] we also do this with our
[8:48] mind
[8:49] when we feel unwell
[8:52] in our mind
[8:54] we also like to blame someone else
[8:59] so that's what I mean and we're going to
[9:00] go into this concept a lot more
[9:05] think about the last time you had a
[9:06] stomach bug
[9:08] yeah
[9:10] first thing you do
[9:11] what did I eat did you eat it did you
[9:13] have that thing we all had that thing no
[9:15] I had that but you didn't have that yeah
[9:18] straight away you start to look at what
[9:20] exactly was the cause of that so as soon
[9:22] as there's a disturbance within you we
[9:25] like to know what the cause of that is
[9:33] but this is not the right way to
[9:35] understand negative emotions
[9:38] we've treated our emotional health in
[9:41] the same way that we've treated our
[9:42] physical health
[9:44] but this isn't the right way to deal
[9:45] with our physical health
[9:47] without emotional health
[9:50] we don't need to start looking
[9:52] externally
[9:53] with our physical health makes sense
[9:55] look for look for the cause why so that
[9:58] you don't do that again so I don't eat
[10:00] that dodgy food again yeah
[10:03] with our emotional health
[10:06] the cause is something different and we
[10:08] haven't understood this what we always
[10:11] do is we like to Define our emotional
[10:15] state based on other people's
[10:18] interaction with us
[10:20] I feel sad because of you
[10:24] I feel angry because of that person and
[10:28] what that person said
[10:30] I feel stressed
[10:33] because of the traffic
[10:36] I feel stressed because I was driving
[10:40] and someone else was driving badly sound
[10:42] familiar
[10:45] I feel down
[10:47] because it's raining
[10:50] yeah
[10:52] I always see this
[10:55] so I grew up in India when I was young
[10:57] rain was a blessing
[11:01] and when I came here the way people
[11:04] talked about rain was very different
[11:07] everyone started saying oh isn't it
[11:10] gloomy they don't just say it's raining
[11:12] they use a negative word oh it's
[11:15] miserable outside isn't it it's terrible
[11:17] the weather is terrible and what I found
[11:19] really interesting even on the TV
[11:22] channels
[11:23] the way the men were saying the same
[11:24] things they were saying it's going to be
[11:26] a gloomy day not a rainy day
[11:29] they are putting words into your mind
[11:31] it's gonna be a negative day you're
[11:34] going to have a gloomy day it's going to
[11:36] be miserable outside it's terrible and I
[11:39] used to go into work and I would say to
[11:42] people oh I love the rain
[11:45] like it's amazing that we have so much
[11:47] rain
[11:48] like when I drive around I always say
[11:51] in summer there's nothing as beautiful
[11:54] as the English Countryside
[11:56] beautiful country you just need to go to
[11:58] Spain or Portugal or anything like that
[11:59] they don't have this lush green
[12:02] vegetation that we have and I'd remind
[12:04] people we live in a beautiful country
[12:07] because of the rain
[12:09] you know all the food that you eat
[12:12] the carrots and the apples and all those
[12:14] things they grow because of the rain
[12:16] that's why we have an abundance of food
[12:18] that's why we have huge farming
[12:20] communities in this country because of
[12:22] the rain
[12:24] so you can start to
[12:26] shift how you think about things same
[12:30] reign
[12:31] two different ways of looking at it
[12:35] so blame is something that we've got
[12:38] into the habit of doing we're constantly
[12:40] blaming something else
[12:42] but
[12:45] let us look a little bit more as to why
[12:47] we suffer
[12:54] what are the causes of suffering
[12:58] this is a simplification we can go into
[13:01] every single one of these symptoms in a
[13:03] lot more detail but I'm going to give
[13:05] you some very high level understandings
[13:08] stress worry and anger all come from a
[13:12] fear
[13:14] stressed whenever you feel stressed
[13:17] whenever you feel worried even when
[13:19] you're angry the root cause of them is
[13:22] actually fear
[13:23] let's think about this
[13:25] all you have to do
[13:27] in the mornings is be a couple of
[13:30] minutes late see what your emotions are
[13:32] like I go through this every day I do
[13:34] the school run I drop my kids off to
[13:36] school
[13:38] we have to leave at a quarter past eight
[13:42] five past eight I'm okay saying yeah
[13:45] guys we need to start getting thinking
[13:48] about getting our shoes and coats on and
[13:50] think bags on
[13:51] ten past eight I'm like starting to
[13:53] raise my voice
[13:54] quarter past eight I'm losing it
[13:57] absolutely losing it
[13:59] guys we're late I don't want to be late
[14:01] if I drop you late then I've got to come
[14:03] home late and I've got to get ready and
[14:05] then I've got to go to work
[14:07] and all of those things start changing
[14:09] my very reaction changes minute by
[14:11] minute you can see it and the kids know
[14:14] and they and mummy's saying to them you
[14:15] better hurry up because it's getting
[14:17] close to quarter past daddy's gonna
[14:19] start getting angry
[14:21] so
[14:22] what is it that's changed
[14:25] what's actually changed at the root
[14:27] cause is I'm getting more and more
[14:29] afraid
[14:31] I'm getting more and more worried
[14:34] actually time is getting later and later
[14:36] and later the kids are like so what kids
[14:39] turn up late all the time
[14:43] kids turn up late to school all the time
[14:45] I don't care about the kids turning up
[14:47] late I'm worried about me being late I
[14:50] don't want to be late so really the root
[14:53] cause is a fear
[14:58] [Music]
[15:06] foreign
[15:07] [Music]
[15:28] the root cause of worry is that I'm
[15:31] starting to get more afraid I'm worried
[15:34] that I'm going to be late
[15:36] so do you see that there's a fear let's
[15:39] look at anger when I'm angry when I get
[15:42] angry at my kids or whatever
[15:44] what I'm really saying is I'm trying to
[15:47] convince you of something but you're not
[15:50] listening
[15:51] and the more and more angry I get is the
[15:54] more and more scared I'm getting that
[15:56] I'm losing my ability to convince you
[15:58] and I really need to convince you it's a
[16:00] fear
[16:01] so I'm getting more and more angry
[16:04] not because of you because my fear is
[16:07] increasing because the likelihood of me
[16:09] winning is getting less and less and
[16:10] less
[16:11] the fear is increasing
[16:13] yeah
[16:15] so let's look at some of these things
[16:19] let's look at pain let's look at
[16:21] pleasure
[16:23] in a very simplistic form
[16:26] we can say
[16:27] that happiness is generally when we get
[16:31] things in life
[16:33] sadness is when things that we won't get
[16:36] taken away this is an oversimplification
[16:39] but actually sometimes it's really
[16:40] useful to start simplifying life in this
[16:43] way
[16:44] and actually think why am I sad what am
[16:46] I worried about what's being taken away
[16:48] right now
[16:50] something is being taken away why do I
[16:52] feel happy let's look at the most
[16:55] fundamental parts of life
[16:57] when somebody is born what do we do
[17:01] we celebrate why because we've received
[17:03] something in our life new babies born
[17:05] we've received something in our life
[17:07] when someone passes away what happens
[17:10] no celebrations there because something
[17:13] has been taken away and actually you can
[17:16] simplify all of your happiness and
[17:18] sadness based on whether something has
[17:21] been given to you or something has been
[17:23] taken away
[17:24] the problem is most of the time we don't
[17:27] understand life in this way
[17:29] most of the time what we do is we like
[17:32] to hold someone else responsible for our
[17:35] emotional state
[17:37] someone else should take the blame for
[17:40] the emotions that you are feeling
[17:45] we need someone to blame and it could be
[17:47] anyone it could be family members
[17:50] colleagues at work friends strangers
[17:52] traffic weather Destiny I blame my
[17:56] destiny have you ever heard these things
[17:58] Punjabi phrases when something goes
[18:01] badly oh
[18:04] karma karma it's in your Karam it's in
[18:08] your karma I love that word my mom uses
[18:10] some joke all the time
[18:12] like it's like oh it's okay it's okay
[18:14] what they're trying to do is they're
[18:16] trying to make themselves say okay I
[18:19] don't really like it but I can't really
[18:21] do much about it so they just kind of
[18:23] blame it okay it's in your Saint Joe how
[18:25] many times do they use those words
[18:27] when the business is succeeding or when
[18:31] something is going well in life or when
[18:33] their kids have passed their exams or
[18:35] anything like that then you don't hear
[18:36] those words
[18:37] you don't hear it was in your Saint
[18:39] George it was in your destiny it was
[18:41] you've got good Karam
[18:43] those words only seem to come out
[18:46] when something goes wrong why because we
[18:48] need something to blame
[18:51] someone or something has to be
[18:53] responsible for the stuff that's
[18:54] happening in my life and the emotions
[18:56] that I'm feeling someone else and
[18:59] something else is always responsible
[19:03] but the wisdom of the guru changes this
[19:07] the guru says
[19:09] as I perceive
[19:12] so I receive
[19:19] what you plant
[19:21] what you sow you shall receive you shall
[19:25] reap
[19:27] so as I see Life
[19:30] so I receive
[19:33] if I see Life as a series of negative
[19:36] events that I'm a victim of
[19:38] then I will be more and more of a victim
[19:41] they did a study one of the biggest
[19:43] studies that has ever been done on
[19:46] whether some people are more lucky than
[19:48] others there's a huge study that was
[19:50] done in America
[19:51] is there actually such a thing as luck
[19:54] because some people walk around just
[19:56] seeming to be lucky all the time
[19:57] everything happens to them and the
[19:59] conclusion of one of the biggest studies
[20:00] on luck concluded
[20:02] actually it's all to do with your
[20:04] positive thinking
[20:06] the people who were more positive
[20:08] walked around with life feeling that
[20:11] they were a lot more lucky and because
[20:12] they felt they were a lot more lucky
[20:14] things just seemed to happen better
[20:17] as I perceive so I received there's
[20:20] actually no such thing as luck
[20:23] go look it up
[20:25] as I think
[20:28] so I feel
[20:30] as I think so I feel
[20:35] not as you do so I feel
[20:40] so why do we suffer
[20:44] let's think about this
[20:48] when you're sad
[20:52] where does your sadness exist
[20:56] in your heart and
[20:59] your mind
[21:02] when you're happy where does happiness
[21:04] exist
[21:05] in your heart and in your mind
[21:08] inside you
[21:11] when you're angry where does it exist
[21:12] inside you
[21:15] when you're afraid where does it exist
[21:17] inside you
[21:20] yet who do we blame
[21:24] everything else around us
[21:26] we blame
[21:28] everything else never looking at oh the
[21:31] feeling is inside so the issue must be
[21:35] inside as well
[21:40] emotional suffering is internal it is
[21:43] not external
[21:47] ask yourself this question
[21:49] when was the last time you blamed your
[21:52] own mind for your sadness
[21:59] never
[22:00] when did you blame your own mind and say
[22:03] it's my fault that I'm feeling sad
[22:06] more often than not it's your fault that
[22:09] I'm feeling sad it's their fault it's
[22:11] someone else's fault
[22:14] so what we're doing is we are living in
[22:18] a life with a warped reality we're
[22:21] walking around thinking this is normal
[22:22] this is normal life everyone acts like
[22:24] this surely this is how life works you
[22:26] guys do something bad I feel bad
[22:29] yeah
[22:30] let's say no one turned up at this
[22:31] course how would I feel I feel terrible
[22:34] but I'd blame all of you guys right for
[22:37] not turning up
[22:41] so what's the solution
[22:45] if the problem exists in here then the
[22:48] solution is to fix what's in here as
[22:51] well
[22:52] how do we do that
[22:57] the most fundamental concept within
[23:01] gurmat and a concept that is unique to
[23:04] this spiritual tradition that you hardly
[23:07] find anywhere else in any other
[23:09] spiritual tradition is the idea of hukum
[23:13] how do we define this word first
[23:16] hukum can be defined
[23:19] as a command normally in your
[23:22] translations you see it as God's command
[23:24] yeah the word hookum does mean
[23:27] command
[23:30] an order like a king giving out orders
[23:35] but
[23:38] we have to be very careful with words
[23:40] because certain words we use create a
[23:44] duality if we call it God's command then
[23:47] it's that guy
[23:49] so I don't like to use the word god
[23:52] yeah Mr Gold
[23:54] so if we use the word order it's his
[23:57] order it's his will
[23:58] then it becomes this so I call hookum
[24:01] Natural order
[24:05] natural order things that are just
[24:07] happening
[24:09] universal law
[24:12] the universe's way
[24:14] the will of the universe
[24:17] starts to change how we interact with it
[24:19] but this is the most important factor of
[24:23] your personal growth and your personal
[24:25] happiness to understand this subject
[24:28] and let's see what the guru says the
[24:30] third Guru Guru amardashi says
[24:36] over
[24:39] one who does not understand this concept
[24:43] one who does not understand hukum
[24:46] cries and cries weeps and wails
[24:52] one who does not understand hukum overly
[24:55] cries in despair internally deluded they
[24:59] do not sleep in peace if you don't
[25:01] understand this the guru is telling you
[25:03] you're going to struggle in life
[25:06] and he's not talking to the Sikhs
[25:09] he's talking to humanity
[25:12] Guru is saying if human beings don't get
[25:15] this they will suffer in life
[25:25] but
[25:28] Guru Arjun devji gives you the other
[25:31] side of hukum as well so the first the
[25:33] first quote says what happens if you
[25:35] don't understand hukum the second quote
[25:37] now says
[25:39] [Music]
[25:40] foreign
[25:43] the ones who understand hukum they will
[25:47] never feel sadness
[25:50] look what the guru has on offer for you
[25:55] the guru is offering you an opportunity
[25:58] in life to never
[26:02] feel sadness again
[26:07] you know yesterday we had some questions
[26:09] around why should I have this why do I
[26:12] need this spirituality why do I need to
[26:13] take this wisdom
[26:16] why do I need to do this and why do I
[26:18] need to do that we had some group
[26:20] questions as I was going around a lot of
[26:22] questions were around external form why
[26:24] do I need to take umbrath why do I need
[26:26] to do all these things right let's put
[26:28] all of that stuff to one side
[26:30] let's see what the guru is offering you
[26:33] I feel like a a host on one of these
[26:36] game shows let's see what's behind door
[26:38] number two
[26:43] the star prize
[26:45] is a lifetime of happiness
[26:49] right and all you've got to do is answer
[26:52] these three questions take your time
[26:57] yeah
[26:58] phone a friend
[27:01] so
[27:03] what is available to you
[27:06] is a lifetime of happiness now you've
[27:10] got to ask yourself am I interested in
[27:12] gurmat
[27:14] is this government for me or not
[27:16] I would say everyone would want this
[27:19] star prize
[27:22] but
[27:26] inside all of our minds
[27:29] there's a doubt that comes up
[27:35] surely it's normal to feel sad and happy
[27:38] surely this is just
[27:40] wishful thinking like no one can be
[27:43] happy all the time
[27:46] no one can be free from despair all the
[27:49] time
[27:53] confirms this
[27:58] nanak says there are a group of people
[28:02] who he calls the enlightened ones who
[28:05] are Sada vikas always
[28:09] free Carefree playful joyful Vegas means
[28:14] playful they're always happy
[28:16] when they listen to what I have to say
[28:19] Sonia NASA
[28:24] when they listen to this message when
[28:26] they apply this
[28:28] they get rid of all mistakes and all
[28:32] sadness is destroyed in their life the
[28:34] guru confirms there are people like this
[28:37] today
[28:39] it's possible it's available to you
[28:42] but you've got to be
[28:45] willing to take this on
[28:47] and you've got to be willing to go
[28:49] against the tide because there is a
[28:51] whole wave especially in Western
[28:54] psychology and Western societies that
[28:58] say this is wishful thinking this is not
[29:00] normal normal mental health is defined
[29:03] by someone who is able to process a
[29:05] range of emotions if you feel happy and
[29:09] if you feel sad
[29:10] your normal
[29:13] a range of emotions correct me if I'm
[29:15] wrong any mental health experts here
[29:18] the definition of mental health is
[29:20] someone who's able to process
[29:24] with a range of emotions and function
[29:27] throughout those range of emotions so as
[29:29] long as you can get to work every day
[29:32] feel as hard as you need to you're
[29:34] functioning you're all right
[29:36] as long as you're a functioning member
[29:38] of society when you stop functioning
[29:40] when you stop serving Society
[29:42] then you've got a problem because you
[29:44] can't get out of bed anymore
[29:47] Guru nanak is saying
[29:52] Guru nanak says I don't see the whole
[29:54] world as normal I see the whole world as
[29:57] suffering
[30:00] Guru nanak defines every single human
[30:02] being alive right now you and me are
[30:05] saying you guys are all miserable
[30:07] why because he's not seeing you as The
[30:10] Benchmark of of being normal he's seeing
[30:13] the puggage the gurus the enlightened
[30:16] ones as The Benchmark of human Mental
[30:18] Health
[30:19] mental well-being these people are what
[30:22] we should all be aspiring to and it's
[30:25] possible
[30:26] it is possible folks
[30:31] so let's look at hookum
[30:39] if we don't look at it in any detail it
[30:41] implies God's will
[30:43] so God you decide all the big stuff in
[30:46] life
[30:47] God's going to decide
[30:49] who I get married to and how many kids
[30:51] we have and God's going to decide when I
[30:53] die but I'm gonna decide the everyday
[30:55] stuff
[30:56] yeah so if there's a cup of tea or a cup
[30:59] of coffee inside me I mean in front of
[31:01] me I'm gonna decide which I'm gonna have
[31:03] but God's gonna make the big decisions
[31:05] the stuff that I can't control
[31:07] so we have to be careful not to use
[31:10] terminology that makes a him enemy and
[31:13] Us and Them
[31:16] the word
[31:18] natural law
[31:19] divine order Universal
[31:23] Oneness
[31:24] these are good ways to understand it but
[31:27] there's an even better word to
[31:29] understand hukum which has worked for me
[31:32] which is reality
[31:34] this is life as it is
[31:38] what is happening right now is hukum you
[31:42] all sitting in this room is reality
[31:45] me standing here reality what you had
[31:48] for breakfast
[31:50] what traffic you encountered it's all
[31:52] life it's just what life is doing not
[31:55] good nor bad
[31:57] it's just life as it is hukum
[32:01] that which is the reality of life
[32:06] but
[32:08] we don't live with that reality in our
[32:12] mind
[32:13] we have our own reality in our mind and
[32:17] what is happening on the outside seems
[32:19] to go against what is happening on the
[32:22] inside
[32:26] so
[32:28] what we live with
[32:31] is something inside our head our notion
[32:35] of what reality is
[32:39] what do you call something that exists
[32:41] inside your head
[32:43] but doesn't exist in the real world
[32:48] a fantasy
[32:50] we're all living in a fantasy
[32:52] let me give you an example
[32:55] when you're driving to work
[32:58] and traffic happens
[33:01] how do you feel
[33:02] agitated stressed
[33:04] worried
[33:06] why
[33:07] not because of the traffic
[33:09] but because in your head
[33:12] the road is clear
[33:14] the road should be clear
[33:16] why is the road not clear
[33:18] what do you mean there's temporary
[33:20] lights
[33:21] what do you mean the road is closed I've
[33:22] got to go the other way around
[33:25] what do you mean there's a lorry broken
[33:26] down
[33:28] that's that's not allowed
[33:30] that's that's that's not a part of my
[33:32] plan I didn't have that picture in my
[33:34] mind
[33:35] I had a picture in my mind that the road
[33:38] was clear
[33:40] stupidly because the road is never clear
[33:42] at this time in the morning
[33:43] but I still had that picture in my mind
[33:45] for some reason I'm living in a fantasy
[33:48] when reality
[33:51] doesn't meet my fantasy
[33:53] all of a sudden it changes how I feel
[33:57] but who do I blame
[33:59] I blame the road I blame the traffic I
[34:01] blame all the other people that are
[34:03] trying to drop their kids to school why
[34:04] don't you guys wake up earlier
[34:07] right so you can drop your kids earlier
[34:10] I don't need to I'm gonna I leave home
[34:12] at the same time every day it's your
[34:14] fault
[34:15] what's happening my emotions
[34:19] are now no longer being controlled by
[34:21] the outside my emotions are being
[34:23] controlled by the fantasy that I'm
[34:25] walking around and saying this is not
[34:27] right this is not normal
[34:31] so we really need to unpack this idea
[34:34] and how fundamental this is to our
[34:37] everyday experience of life
[34:42] the simplest example
[34:46] that I like to start with
[34:49] do you remember when you were younger
[34:51] maybe some of you guys won't remember
[34:53] some of the older guys will remember
[34:56] when you were younger
[34:58] when there were no mobile phones
[35:01] you had to agree with someone to meet
[35:03] you somewhere
[35:05] right and then you would turn up and you
[35:08] just stand there until they turn up
[35:11] right
[35:12] because there was no way of contacting
[35:15] them
[35:16] because they probably left their homes
[35:17] there's no point even going to the phone
[35:19] box
[35:20] yeah I have I have to tell my kids what
[35:22] a phone box is
[35:24] literally two days ago I was dropping my
[35:27] kids to school there's a phone box
[35:28] outside the school and they said Daddy
[35:29] look there's somebody in there making a
[35:31] phone call
[35:32] and I'm like yes kids like there are
[35:35] people without mobile phones
[35:38] right they're like so fascinated by the
[35:40] fact that somebody's in a phone box
[35:42] making a phone call I actually have an
[35:45] old school like phone in my office my
[35:47] kid comes up to me the other day and
[35:48] said Daddy what's that
[35:50] and I'm trying to explain to him it's a
[35:52] telephone and he's like pointing at a
[35:54] mobile saying no that's how you make
[35:55] phone calls and either this got buttons
[35:57] and this has got a wire and I'm like
[36:00] yeah that's the phone that's that's what
[36:01] a phone looks like right so in the old
[36:05] days you always used to carry a 10p coin
[36:07] so that you could call home if you're
[36:09] going to be late all right do you
[36:10] remember those
[36:12] and
[36:14] if I
[36:16] call you
[36:18] and I said to you let's go out let's go
[36:19] to the cinema whatever
[36:21] and we agree a Time
[36:23] I want you to be there at 12 o'clock
[36:26] we're going to be there at 12 o'clock we
[36:27] turn up we're there at 12 o'clock I'm
[36:28] there at 12 o'clock
[36:30] if you turn up
[36:32] at
[36:34] 12 30.
[36:36] how am I going to feel
[36:39] all right not too bad okay I have to
[36:41] wait half an hour but not too bad
[36:44] if you turned up at 1 30 when we and
[36:46] I've been standing there since 12
[36:48] o'clock
[36:49] how am I gonna feel
[36:51] how are you gonna feel
[36:53] I know it no phone calls no text no
[36:55] what's up nothing just turned up late no
[36:57] excuses nothing just be like oh yeah
[36:59] should we go watch the movie
[37:01] what do you mean I've been standing here
[37:02] for an hour and a half
[37:04] what has happened
[37:06] I set an expectation in my mind because
[37:09] I had a conversation with you we agreed
[37:10] it I set an expectation in my mind then
[37:14] I'd walk along to the cinema that's how
[37:16] I walk
[37:16] walk along to the cinema there I don't
[37:19] know why I'm walking to the cinema but
[37:20] I'm walking
[37:22] and I'm there I'm standing outside
[37:24] ticket in my hand waiting
[37:26] 12 5 past 12 10 past 12. what is
[37:30] happening to my emotions more and more
[37:32] and more
[37:34] it's getting worse and worse and worse
[37:35] isn't it I'm getting more and more angry
[37:38] so what is happening is that I am
[37:42] sticking to 12 o'clock in my mind 12
[37:44] o'clock he should have been here 12
[37:46] o'clock it's five past 12. it's 10 past
[37:47] 12 it's quarter past 12. it's half past
[37:50] 12. my voice is getting higher I'm
[37:51] getting more stress agitated my
[37:53] breathing is changing
[37:54] why because I've held on to
[37:57] this expectation or this fantasy in my
[38:01] mind that that I call you at 12 you're
[38:04] going to turn up at 12.
[38:06] my happiness
[38:08] is now based on my expectation
[38:11] nothing to do with you in reality
[38:13] actually it's a little bit to do with
[38:14] you because you should have turned up on
[38:15] time
[38:17] but my happiness
[38:19] is based on my expectation so I want you
[38:22] to remember this little mathematical
[38:24] formula
[38:26] reality minus expectations
[38:30] equals happiness or sadness
[38:33] yeah let's write that down
[38:39] reality
[38:43] minus expectation
[38:49] determines
[38:52] my happiness
[38:54] or my sadness
[38:57] how do you spell is it double a double d
[39:00] single d
[39:02] teaches in the room please help me
[39:05] reality minus expectation equals
[39:08] the happiness or sadness that I feel
[39:10] let's let's elaborate on this on this
[39:12] idea further because I really want you
[39:14] to understand this
[39:15] the peace or suffering that I feel is
[39:18] based on my ideas in my head let's
[39:20] elaborate this further
[39:22] if you turned up at five past
[39:25] you've met my expectations five past 12
[39:28] you're a couple of minutes late no big
[39:30] deal you're within the boundaries of my
[39:32] expectation
[39:33] if you turned up at half past
[39:36] you're Way Beyond the boundaries of my
[39:38] expectation if you turned up at one
[39:39] o'clock or two o'clock like you're so
[39:42] far away from my expectation
[39:44] that now my emotional state is so
[39:47] deviated from the reality the reality is
[39:50] you turned up late it could have been a
[39:51] number of reasons you know my car broke
[39:54] down I had a flat tire I woke up late
[39:56] the shower was broken it could be a
[39:58] number of reasons but at this point I
[40:00] don't care at this point I'm so livid
[40:02] because you've gone so beyond my
[40:07] expectation
[40:09] but where is the reality the reality is
[40:11] there where you've turned up but I'm not
[40:14] there I'm here in the expectation I'm
[40:17] stuck here I'm putting my feet down
[40:19] let's change this scenario a little bit
[40:22] let's say I say to you
[40:24] come over to my house
[40:27] you say what time shall I come I say I'm
[40:29] home all day come at any time
[40:32] anytime
[40:34] so you turn up at midday how do I feel
[40:38] how do you feel I turn up at midday how
[40:41] do you feel all right
[40:43] I turn up at 3 P.M tea time how do you
[40:46] feel
[40:47] you feel all right
[40:50] I turn up at six o'clock in the evening
[40:52] how do you feel you feel all right
[40:55] what's the difference
[40:57] same scenario we said we would meet and
[41:01] I turn up at whatever time I like but
[41:03] your emotional state is not affected why
[41:06] what didn't you set in your mind
[41:08] an expectation you didn't set an
[41:11] expectation you allowed reality to do
[41:14] whatever it was going to do whatever
[41:16] reality wanted to do you let it do
[41:19] so you turn about midday
[41:21] fine you turn up at 6 PM fine guess what
[41:26] you turn up at 2AM how do I feel
[41:29] there's a little bit of expectation
[41:31] isn't there
[41:32] come on be realistic you turn up at 2 am
[41:34] and I'm sleeping
[41:37] he's like hey man you said any time
[41:40] right there's a little bit of
[41:41] expectation in my heart in my mind yeah
[41:44] but I meant daytime yeah there's a
[41:46] little bit of expectation even if you
[41:48] think you're not creating an expectation
[41:49] you've created a little bit
[41:51] yeah
[41:53] a subtle one
[41:55] so now what's your emotional state all
[41:57] over the place what do you mean turning
[41:59] up at this time all that sort of stuff
[42:00] yeah the guy's actually done what you've
[42:03] told them to do
[42:05] come at any time
[42:06] you weren't specific enough
[42:14] there's so many ways that we can start
[42:15] unpacking this and I'm gonna spend a lot
[42:17] of time on this because I want you to
[42:19] understand this
[42:21] husbands pay attention
[42:25] you ask your wife
[42:27] it's your birthday coming up what would
[42:29] you like
[42:30] your wife says
[42:33] don't go to any trouble
[42:37] it's the day of the birthday
[42:42] you've done nothing
[42:45] right
[42:46] how does your wife feel
[42:49] annoyed
[42:50] disappointed
[42:54] and then you say but sweetheart you said
[42:57] don't do anything
[42:59] yeah but I didn't mean it
[43:02] right
[43:04] what did the wife do
[43:06] she created an expectation and her
[43:08] expectation said if you have to ask you
[43:10] don't know me very well
[43:11] right you shouldn't have to ask we've
[43:13] been married for long enough
[43:15] yeah surprise me that's what she really
[43:17] means don't do anything surprise me
[43:21] but he actually followed your
[43:23] instruction to the T
[43:25] I didn't do anything you said not to do
[43:27] anything or do it the other way around
[43:30] honey I don't want you to do anything
[43:31] seriously let's not make a big deal of
[43:33] it
[43:34] birthday comes along you throw a huge
[43:36] surprise party how does she feel
[43:38] probably a little bit annoyed like no I
[43:40] actually meant I didn't want to do
[43:42] anything or if we were going to do
[43:43] something let's do something small I
[43:45] didn't want all this how did she feel
[43:47] so she set expectations in her mind
[43:52] you set an expectation but you don't
[43:55] communicate that properly
[43:59] he mean another thing
[44:02] and then your emotional state is his
[44:05] fault it's your fault you should know
[44:08] what I mean
[44:09] you should know by now
[44:11] yeah but the expectation and the
[44:14] emotional state is your doing you've set
[44:17] that expectation in your mind
[44:19] okay
[44:24] let's I always want to bring this back
[44:25] to hookum bring this back to gurbani
[44:28] bring this back to gurmat
[44:30] I don't want anyone to sit here and
[44:33] think that this is something else
[44:35] this is some other knowledge this is
[44:37] just some worldly stuff
[44:39] Guru nanak
[44:42] defines his path by hukum
[44:46] what is the first question in the guru
[44:49] Grand sahib
[44:51] first phrase written in the form of a
[44:54] question
[44:56] give satyara
[44:59] how do I find truth how do I destroy
[45:02] falsehood
[45:07] Guru nanak's first answer to the very
[45:10] first question in Guru Gran sahib is
[45:13] walk on the path of hukum walk according
[45:16] to what reality is doing if you want to
[45:18] be calm and peaceful and happy in life
[45:21] if you want to find inner Bliss
[45:24] it is all based on how willing you are
[45:28] to let reality do what it's going to do
[45:31] your happiness your and your happiness
[45:34] and your peace in life is based on your
[45:37] ability to walk along with reality
[45:41] not to be fixed in your fantasy and let
[45:44] reality go
[45:46] that reality gets away from you but
[45:48] you're saying but I didn't I never
[45:50] expected this to happen my I I want life
[45:52] to be like this
[45:55] what are we doing when we're doing our
[45:56] ardas
[45:59] we're creating fantasies God please can
[46:02] you do this for me please can you do
[46:03] that for me I've done an account part I
[46:05] put a bit of money pound pounds into the
[46:07] Gurdwara exotic bond yet another 101
[46:09] pounds and all that sort of stuff yeah
[46:11] I've done all the stuff that I need to
[46:13] do
[46:13] right
[46:15] I done my bit you need to do your bit it
[46:17] doesn't happen
[46:19] no I don't believe in God
[46:21] why because they didn't answer my prayer
[46:23] I put that 10 pounds in the golet didn't
[46:26] answer my prayer I put that 10 pounds in
[46:28] the golet
[46:30] job done
[46:31] it's like God's like McDonald's you put
[46:34] something in you get something back
[46:36] right that's what we're treating the
[46:37] Gurdwara Golic like you know you put
[46:39] some money in you get something back
[46:43] what have we done
[46:46] this is what we're doing we're creating
[46:47] fantasies within our mind
[46:49] what Guru nanak is saying
[46:51] is whatever reality does
[46:54] you stand there
[46:56] whatever reality does
[46:59] anything that happens in life if you
[47:02] want to be happy you go with it you
[47:04] stand with it
[47:05] you say okay
[47:08] say yes
[47:10] not no
[47:13] you're suffering
[47:15] is based
[47:17] on how much resistance you have towards
[47:20] life
[47:21] the more you resist anything that's
[47:23] happening
[47:25] the more sadness you're going to feel
[47:26] what does resistance mean no I don't
[47:29] want life to be like that
[47:31] I want life to be like this
[47:34] and now I'm gonna do some prayers to
[47:37] tell the whole universe what it should
[47:39] do according to what I think is right in
[47:41] my head that's what we do with ardas
[47:44] you need to change your stuff the whole
[47:47] universe you need to change because I've
[47:49] got a pretty good idea of what I think
[47:50] life should be like
[47:53] I'm going to decide what life is like
[47:54] and I'm going to tell you about it
[47:57] and the whole of life has to move
[47:59] according to my hookum
[48:02] I'm gonna make the commands
[48:05] and then I'm going to be upset when you
[48:06] don't listen
[48:08] yeah
[48:10] it's like
[48:13] we've made the universe
[48:16] into a magic Genie and the universe is
[48:20] supposed to come up to you and say Yes
[48:22] master
[48:23] you've got three wishes
[48:25] you ask for whatever you like and I will
[48:27] say yes
[48:29] what are we doing
[48:30] and what is Guru nanak asking you to do
[48:32] Guru nanak is asking you to to walk on
[48:35] the path of hukum it's his first
[48:37] instruction to you
[48:38] and that is the most important
[48:40] instruction because those who don't do
[48:42] it they're always going to suffer the
[48:44] ones who do it will never feel sadness
[48:47] again
[48:54] so
[48:56] what the guru is asking you to do
[48:59] is to learn to live with the
[49:02] unpredictability of life
[49:06] learn to accept
[49:09] that life is going to be unpredictable
[49:12] life is going to change life is going to
[49:15] do stuff that you have no idea what is
[49:18] going to do
[49:19] learned to make that your reality learn
[49:24] to make unpredictability your
[49:27] expectation
[49:30] make unpredictability your expectation
[49:33] so without saying it you guys have all
[49:36] made an expectation coming here today
[49:38] one of the expectations is I'm going to
[49:40] turn up
[49:41] one of your expectations is you're going
[49:44] to be here till the end of the day one
[49:46] of your expectations is the roof isn't
[49:49] going to collapse
[49:50] we are subtly creating expectations all
[49:53] the time without even knowing it so when
[49:57] one of these unpredicted things happen
[49:59] our emotions go all over the place
[50:03] oh that wasn't meant to happen
[50:05] well you know what yes it was meant to
[50:08] happen and that's why it happened
[50:10] it happened because it was meant to
[50:12] happen
[50:13] but when you say that wasn't meant to
[50:15] happen what you mean was
[50:17] that wasn't the picture in my head
[50:20] this reality isn't
[50:22] good for me this doesn't work for me
[50:25] sorry can you change it please
[50:29] I've got a better idea of what life
[50:30] should be Guru nanak is saying that's
[50:33] why you get upset
[50:34] that's why you struggle in life
[50:38] you have created a fantasy in your mind
[50:43] have you found that spiritual teachings
[50:45] are great to learn but not always easy
[50:48] to apply to your own life
[50:50] sometimes we all need a bit of support
[50:53] and guidance from people who know what
[50:55] we're going through and can help us find
[50:57] some answers
[50:58] the non-agnom Facebook group helps you
[51:01] do just that it's an online community
[51:03] where you can ask any questions about
[51:05] life and get answers from other members
[51:08] of the group
[51:10] search for nanak Nam community support
[51:12] and join our free Facebook group today
[51:19] there is
[51:21] a phrase
[51:22] that we all use
[51:25] which is the cause of a lot of our
[51:27] suffering
[51:28] and that phrase
[51:30] is I want
[51:34] I want
[51:35] sounds simple enough I want
[51:39] but let's think about this I want
[51:42] is the cause
[51:44] of almost all of your suffering
[51:47] and it goes in line with the fantasy
[51:50] that you've built in your head so I told
[51:52] you to turn up at this time what I'm
[51:54] really saying is I want you to turn up
[51:57] at this time I don't just set an
[51:59] expectation and then say I've said it
[52:01] but I don't really care about it I've
[52:02] set the expectation saying I want
[52:05] you to turn up at this time I want my
[52:09] phone to stay fixed I want the traffic
[52:12] to be clear
[52:14] any time you can think or say something
[52:19] to the effect of I want what you're
[52:22] really saying
[52:24] is if
[52:26] reality goes the way I want
[52:29] then I'll be happy
[52:32] what that really means is happiness is
[52:35] at the end of that statement
[52:38] what that really means is I'm not happy
[52:41] now I'll only be happy when I get what I
[52:45] want
[52:48] your happiness is over there at the end
[52:52] of that I want
[52:54] any time you say I want in life
[52:58] what you're really saying is I'm not
[53:01] happy now
[53:03] but we start getting confused well what
[53:06] do you mean
[53:07] am I not allowed to want things in life
[53:09] am I not allowed to
[53:11] I want good things for my family should
[53:14] I not want a good career
[53:17] what I'm saying to you
[53:20] is
[53:21] every time you do that
[53:24] you build a tiny little expectation in
[53:26] your mind
[53:27] nobody is stopping you
[53:29] you can have all the expectations you
[53:32] like you can have all the wants that you
[53:34] like
[53:35] but be prepared
[53:37] to have all the suffering that comes
[53:39] with the I wants and the expectations
[53:41] don't be surprised later on when you
[53:45] suffer and then you blame someone else
[53:47] like oh what do you mean like that's
[53:49] that's not that that's not what's in my
[53:51] head
[53:53] so I want is your cause of suffering and
[53:58] the gurmat word
[53:59] the concept for that is desire
[54:02] well I don't use the word desire because
[54:04] it sounds like oh I don't have any
[54:05] desires well guess what you making
[54:07] desires every minute little I want
[54:09] statements yeah
[54:12] like what do I want to wear today you
[54:14] turn up to the cupboard I don't want to
[54:16] wear that you turn up oh it's not there
[54:18] oh it's in the laundry oh Mom why didn't
[54:21] you wash it all that sort of stuff yeah
[54:22] why why why is why is it why is it in
[54:24] the lottery
[54:25] because you put it there
[54:27] oh why isn't it clean
[54:29] because I'm doing the laundry tomorrow
[54:31] but I want to wear that now
[54:34] little I want statements are going on
[54:35] all the time I want you to have done
[54:37] something without me even asking you
[54:41] little I want little expectations all
[54:43] the time
[54:44] and they are causing your emotional
[54:46] state remember folks we're only talking
[54:48] about your emotions I don't care about
[54:50] what you want
[54:51] I don't care about your expectations
[54:55] but you are the one living with these
[54:58] emotional turmoil every day at every
[55:00] little time
[55:01] the reason why I'm giving you so many
[55:03] examples is to show you I'm going
[55:05] through this stuff as well we're all
[55:07] going through these things every day
[55:11] so
[55:12] one final example
[55:15] I'm dropping my kids to school
[55:18] some days I have a great time same
[55:21] Journey same time leaving at the same
[55:23] time some days I'm thinking oh I really
[55:26] like dropping my kids to school it's a
[55:28] really nice time just me and the kids
[55:29] getting to bond with them this is lovely
[55:32] other days I'm screaming at them
[55:36] and other days I'm like let's just put
[55:38] some kirtan on just so that I can have
[55:40] some peace and quiet
[55:41] right
[55:42] what's happening is that the kids are
[55:46] acting differently every day some days
[55:48] they're dead quiet they're looking out
[55:50] the window and I'm thinking oh isn't
[55:52] this lovely that's so nice father child
[55:55] bonding time
[55:56] sometimes they're asking really
[55:58] interesting questions and we're having a
[55:59] little conversation about it the next
[56:01] day they're asking questions but I've
[56:03] got something else on my mind and I'm
[56:05] getting stressed and I stop asking
[56:06] questions
[56:08] the other time they're fighting away
[56:10] yeah just kicking and pinching each
[56:13] other Daddy he punched me he touched my
[56:15] nose and stole like a sort of stuff all
[56:16] right that's happening all the time
[56:18] parents will completely understand this
[56:20] stuff right
[56:21] and so my emotions
[56:24] are different every single day when I'm
[56:27] dropping them to school because I have
[56:30] one expectation in my mind that every
[56:32] day when I drop them to school they're
[56:34] going to be quiet
[56:36] but they're not they're kids they do
[56:39] what kids do every day they don't they
[56:40] don't live according to your plans
[56:42] they don't even make any plans of their
[56:44] own they just every day they have no
[56:45] idea how they're gonna act yeah
[56:48] my question to you is do you know how
[56:51] you're going to act every day can you
[56:52] wake up in the morning
[56:55] and know what range of emotions am I
[56:58] going to go through today
[57:00] can't it's potluck isn't it
[57:03] it's like you're jumping on a roller
[57:05] coaster when you wake up in the mornings
[57:06] I have no idea how I'm gonna feel today
[57:09] isn't that a bit strange that you have
[57:10] no control over your own emotions
[57:13] you just wake up every morning and say
[57:15] good luck you know
[57:18] good luck out there
[57:21] because you have no idea what emotions
[57:23] you're going to go through because
[57:24] you're not aware of the
[57:27] patients that you're going to set for
[57:29] yourselves you're not aware of how to
[57:31] deal when life just starts doing random
[57:34] stuff
[57:35] unpredictability
[57:40] so what do you have to ask yourself at
[57:44] every moment of stress distress sadness
[57:47] fear anger
[57:49] anything that you might call an unwanted
[57:52] negative emotion ask yourself this
[57:54] question
[57:55] what expectation have I set of this
[57:57] moment
[57:59] and you'll notice straight away the
[58:02] emotion drops
[58:03] when you ask yourself that question
[58:06] what expectation have I set of this
[58:08] moment
[58:09] why am I feeling this way because of an
[58:12] expectation what expectations ah I
[58:15] expected the kids to be quiet
[58:17] when you realize your expectation and
[58:20] you let it go
[58:21] and then you're driving and you're happy
[58:23] oh the kids are making a noise but I
[58:25] don't have any expectation
[58:27] so I'm free
[58:30] I free myself
[58:31] because I free myself of an expectation
[58:34] that I didn't know I was carrying around
[58:40] so we're doing this all the time
[58:43] you know sometimes you see these nature
[58:44] programs and there's the fish that's
[58:46] always like jumping against the stream
[58:48] like really struggling and they look
[58:50] like they'd like really like struggling
[58:52] for air and then they go back in and
[58:53] we're doing that all the time
[58:56] where the fish
[58:58] the flow of life is the river
[59:04] and the guru refers to life in this way
[59:08] the guru refers to Life as a stream an
[59:12] ever-flowing stream
[59:15] life is going in one way
[59:18] Daria
[59:20] [Music]
[59:22] yeah you are the river you are the doer
[59:25] of all things
[59:30] so gurbani is trying to make you
[59:32] understand that life is not against you
[59:38] life is not doing stuff to spite you
[59:42] if the river is Flowing one way and the
[59:45] fish is foolish enough to go the other
[59:48] way he can't then turn around and blame
[59:50] the river and saying you're the reason
[59:52] why I feel stressed
[59:56] because the river is saying hey man
[59:59] go with the flow
[1:00:01] my hookum is that I have to go in this
[1:00:04] direction the river can only go
[1:00:06] Downstream that's his hookum that's the
[1:00:08] only way he can go that's his command
[1:00:10] that's his life
[1:00:13] and the fish is saying but I want to go
[1:00:15] that way
[1:00:17] and life is saying but I am going this
[1:00:20] way it doesn't matter what you want I am
[1:00:22] going this way
[1:00:23] come along it's a lot easier
[1:00:27] let go of what you want let go of Desire
[1:00:31] the first issue out of five issues in
[1:00:35] our life the punch chore we get we call
[1:00:37] them the Five Thieves the Five Thieves
[1:00:39] that steal what
[1:00:41] if they're a Thief what are they
[1:00:42] stealing they're stealing your bliss
[1:00:46] they're stealing your bliss away from
[1:00:48] you and the number one Thief is desire
[1:00:51] calm
[1:00:53] wants I want that stealing your
[1:00:56] happiness
[1:00:57] and when you want something more and
[1:00:59] more and more
[1:01:00] then you're getting more and more angry
[1:01:03] so when you want to more you get angry
[1:01:06] more what's the second one growth
[1:01:10] and then you really want it I really
[1:01:12] want it I'm determined
[1:01:14] lope greed you start saying I'm really
[1:01:18] going in that way and when you finally
[1:01:20] if you do get it then say ah I did it
[1:01:23] it's mine I got it it's mine yeah I did
[1:01:26] it I'm the one to celebrate more
[1:01:28] attachment
[1:01:30] and when you finally go against the tide
[1:01:33] and you get whatever you want you create
[1:01:35] an identity you put a brick on your
[1:01:38] identity this is who I am I'm the one
[1:01:41] that succeeded in life I'm the one that
[1:01:42] did this
[1:01:44] Guru nanak has described a psychological
[1:01:47] process
[1:01:50] desire anger greed at attachment
[1:01:54] identification
[1:01:56] this is a psychological process that you
[1:01:58] and me all go through and he says this
[1:02:01] process is stealing your bliss
[1:02:05] and it's happening to all of us
[1:02:11] life is going to do what life is going
[1:02:14] to do
[1:02:15] you want to Define hookum in a one way
[1:02:17] life is going to do what it's going to
[1:02:18] do
[1:02:20] so let life do what it's going to do
[1:02:27] asking why life is doing what it's doing
[1:02:30] is futile
[1:02:35] any science fiction Geeks
[1:02:37] trekkies
[1:02:40] the biggest
[1:02:44] resistance force
[1:02:46] against
[1:02:48] Starship Federation
[1:02:50] was a group of robotic aliens called the
[1:02:53] Borg
[1:02:55] and they were the meanest and the
[1:02:57] baddest enemies
[1:02:59] of the Star Trek characters and they
[1:03:02] used to have a saying
[1:03:04] resistance is futile
[1:03:08] we are going to win we are going to
[1:03:10] assimilate you we are going to kill you
[1:03:14] don't resist
[1:03:16] so be like the Borg
[1:03:18] resistance is futile
[1:03:20] resisting against life is pointless
[1:03:24] asking why did this happen to me is like
[1:03:27] the fish asking the river
[1:03:29] why are you going that way
[1:03:31] Guru nanak explains
[1:03:37] he says cannot be explained asking why
[1:03:41] is pointless because it's going to do
[1:03:43] what it's going to do hukum cannot be
[1:03:45] explained why it does what it does it
[1:03:47] just does what it does a
[1:03:50] you can't ask questions about life it
[1:03:53] just does what it does but what you can
[1:03:54] do is
[1:03:56] you can go with the flow
[1:03:59] see you guys all thought Guru nanak was
[1:04:01] talking about God
[1:04:02] he's talking about you and how to make
[1:04:04] you happy
[1:04:10] but you don't want life to go the way
[1:04:12] it's gonna go
[1:04:13] you on the way life is gonna go
[1:04:15] according to you
[1:04:16] that is called home ego
[1:04:20] hankar
[1:04:22] my ideas how I want life to go
[1:04:26] so you reject reality
[1:04:29] and you hold on to your fantasy
[1:04:31] so when you start to understand life in
[1:04:34] this way you start to understand
[1:04:36] in reality there is no good and bad
[1:04:39] there is what is happening
[1:04:41] and there is what you want to happen
[1:04:45] there's actually no good or bad
[1:04:49] common question we get all the time
[1:04:53] why do bad things happen to good people
[1:04:57] what does quranic say
[1:05:00] there is no one bad and there is no one
[1:05:02] good
[1:05:05] um
[1:05:07] who am I going to call bad and good
[1:05:09] subject everything is you you're doing
[1:05:13] everything who am I going to call good
[1:05:14] and bad
[1:05:15] by what standard am I gonna label the
[1:05:18] the circumstances of life as good or bad
[1:05:21] I tell you by what standard by my
[1:05:23] standard
[1:05:24] it's good because it suits me it's bad
[1:05:28] because it doesn't suit me
[1:05:30] and then you want to know why you can't
[1:05:31] find God because there's a big me
[1:05:33] standing in the way of the flow of right
[1:05:35] of life
[1:05:37] God is the flow of life
[1:05:40] this is what we mean when we say you are
[1:05:42] God
[1:05:43] because you are hukum you think you made
[1:05:46] yourself come here today you didn't
[1:05:49] you didn't make yourself come here today
[1:05:51] the whole universe had to do a whole
[1:05:53] bunch of stuff in order for you to sit
[1:05:55] here today
[1:05:58] you are the product of hukum
[1:06:01] you are the product of the river going
[1:06:03] in a certain way but every now and then
[1:06:06] you forget and you start going the other
[1:06:07] way but in reality you can't do much
[1:06:10] outside of hukum
[1:06:12] but you can do a lot of battling with
[1:06:14] hookum in your mind
[1:06:17] the truth of the matter is you don't
[1:06:19] even know
[1:06:21] if the next breath is going to come in
[1:06:22] you don't know
[1:06:24] how many times have we heard
[1:06:26] people who've passed away for no reason
[1:06:28] oh they died too young that wasn't their
[1:06:31] time they weren't supposed to go that's
[1:06:34] the kind of words we use
[1:06:36] what's the hookum way of talking about
[1:06:38] it no they were supposed to go that was
[1:06:40] their time
[1:06:41] it might not have suited you but that
[1:06:44] was their time
[1:06:47] but that was not your fantasy
[1:06:50] so we see
[1:06:52] that good means that life is meeting my
[1:06:55] expectations and bad is that life is not
[1:06:57] meeting my expectations
[1:07:01] the universe is not against you though
[1:07:03] you have to learn to not be against the
[1:07:06] universe
[1:07:09] foreign
[1:07:12] so what about people's actions surely
[1:07:15] some people are doing bad stuff
[1:07:17] surely some people are doing bad things
[1:07:19] surely there are some things that we
[1:07:21] should agree as a as a group as a
[1:07:23] society that these things are not
[1:07:24] allowed
[1:07:26] so we see blame as integral to people
[1:07:29] taking personal responsibility I want
[1:07:31] you to take the blame for this so that
[1:07:34] you learn not to do that again
[1:07:36] but what we don't understand
[1:07:38] nobody does what they think is wrong
[1:07:41] everybody is walking around thinking I'm
[1:07:44] right I'm even a thief thinks he's right
[1:07:48] what does the thief think that guy's got
[1:07:50] too much money if I take some of it no
[1:07:53] big deal I'm right like I've had a hard
[1:07:56] life I should have a good life I'll take
[1:07:58] a bit of his money he's not doing it
[1:08:00] saying I'm gonna do the wrong thing he's
[1:08:03] doing it saying that's the right for me
[1:08:05] so you think you're right
[1:08:09] and the person you dislike is thinking
[1:08:11] they're right everybody is thinking that
[1:08:14] they're right and you both are arguing
[1:08:15] at with each other
[1:08:17] and what you're really arguing about is
[1:08:18] but in my head I'm right and in my head
[1:08:21] you're wrong and the other guy's saying
[1:08:22] in my head I'm right
[1:08:24] and in my head you're wrong
[1:08:27] so who's right and who's wrong
[1:08:33] so we create this Duality all the time
[1:08:35] I'm the victim I Blame You
[1:08:38] you're wrong I'm right we create all of
[1:08:41] this conflict in our life
[1:08:45] you know one of my favorite
[1:08:47] lines from job site absolutely touches
[1:08:50] me every time
[1:08:52] Guru nanak Dev ji talked about hukum
[1:08:55] Guru Gobind Singh ji refines it in such
[1:08:58] a beautiful way he says
[1:09:04] I bow down to the one who creates
[1:09:07] conflict I bow down to the one who
[1:09:10] creates peace and tranquility
[1:09:12] foreign
[1:09:15] and the one who is the embodiment of
[1:09:18] Shanti of bliss
[1:09:21] the gurus were all talking about the
[1:09:23] same things don't ever have this idea
[1:09:24] that one Guru is different from another
[1:09:27] you know we'd like to think these days
[1:09:29] oh I wish the gurus were around
[1:09:32] sometimes we think like I wish the gurus
[1:09:34] were around the guru is around it's
[1:09:37] called Guru Gran Sab you think Guru Gran
[1:09:38] sahib is going to say a different answer
[1:09:40] to Guru nanak
[1:09:41] they're saying the same thing it's
[1:09:43] people like to think like Robin Singh ji
[1:09:45] left us with some inferior Guru like oh
[1:09:48] it would have been better if the guru
[1:09:49] was here
[1:09:51] The Guru Guru Gobind Singh ji didn't
[1:09:52] leave you with an inferior Guru he left
[1:09:54] you with a superior Guru because all the
[1:09:56] gurus are in Guru gran sahib and not
[1:09:58] only are the gurus
[1:10:00] are in Guru Gran sahib as well
[1:10:03] look at the treasure we've been left
[1:10:04] with
[1:10:06] don't ever walk around saying I wish the
[1:10:08] guru was around think the panther would
[1:10:09] be a lot better
[1:10:11] the Sikhs would be in a much better
[1:10:12] position you have the guru
[1:10:15] you just don't know what to do with this
[1:10:17] Guru
[1:10:18] yeah so you keep doing your account
[1:10:20] Parts thinking that that's going to
[1:10:22] solve all the problems
[1:10:25] that's what we do
[1:10:29] so every single person is acting
[1:10:32] according to their hookum now here's
[1:10:34] another word for hookum programming
[1:10:37] I'm an I.T geek right so that's a really
[1:10:39] simple example for me I understand that
[1:10:42] programming you're coded in a certain
[1:10:45] way
[1:10:46] let's take a different word conditioning
[1:10:48] everybody acts according to their
[1:10:51] conditioning you don't do anything
[1:10:53] outside of how you've been conditioned
[1:10:56] by your scenarios your circumstances
[1:10:59] your upbringing the reason you think the
[1:11:02] way you think about every single thing
[1:11:04] is because life has molded you in that
[1:11:06] way so you're now of the opinions that
[1:11:10] you have
[1:11:11] because you've been programmed in a
[1:11:13] certain way so
[1:11:16] we can start looking at very difficult
[1:11:17] scenarios in life now people did what
[1:11:21] they did to you because they were
[1:11:23] programmed in that way that's what they
[1:11:25] thought was the only right way to do it
[1:11:27] let's go into some serious issues here
[1:11:30] conflict debate domestic abuse
[1:11:34] the people who were doing it were
[1:11:37] conditioned they were programmed in that
[1:11:39] way
[1:11:40] now I'm not saying we just sit back and
[1:11:42] say okay that's not a problem you can go
[1:11:45] you were conditioned in that way I'm not
[1:11:47] saying that we have everyone just walk
[1:11:49] around free do whatever they want I
[1:11:51] don't care about what other people do I
[1:11:53] want you to care about your emotional
[1:11:55] state let's not worry about fixing the
[1:11:57] whole world
[1:11:58] let's fix our mind and maybe the world
[1:12:01] will be okay
[1:12:04] conquer your mind first before you
[1:12:06] conquer the whole world
[1:12:08] fix this stuff because there's a lot to
[1:12:11] fix just in here
[1:12:14] so
[1:12:17] whatever the scenario is it starts with
[1:12:19] an expectation in our mind that life
[1:12:21] should always be pleasurable that's a
[1:12:24] big expectation
[1:12:25] my life is supposed to go well
[1:12:27] that's an expectation I'm supposed to be
[1:12:30] happy all the time good stuff is
[1:12:32] supposed to happen to me because I'm a
[1:12:33] good person
[1:12:35] bad stuff not supposed to happen to me
[1:12:37] life is supposed to go well
[1:12:41] but that's not reality
[1:12:44] that's not the reality of life is it
[1:12:46] life does what it does
[1:12:48] that's what it does
[1:12:52] and what we do is we stick on hold on to
[1:12:55] negativity how many times have you done
[1:12:58] this
[1:13:00] you're sitting somewhere perfectly happy
[1:13:01] somebody who you don't like walks past
[1:13:05] what happens to your emotional state
[1:13:06] like they haven't even seen you they're
[1:13:09] just like walking away like look what
[1:13:12] happens to your emotional state
[1:13:14] all over the place he did this to me he
[1:13:17] did that to me he did this he did that
[1:13:19] all over the place your emotions
[1:13:22] you know what I call that
[1:13:25] I say you're meditating on that person
[1:13:28] because guess what
[1:13:30] an hour later they've long gone
[1:13:32] what have you got
[1:13:34] still holding on to that in your mind
[1:13:36] isn't that meditation isn't that simran
[1:13:39] my question to you is why are you
[1:13:41] meditating on the people you don't like
[1:13:44] why are you holding on to them
[1:13:46] that person said this that person said
[1:13:47] this that person you just keep doing it
[1:13:49] you keep meditating on that person do
[1:13:52] you want to meditate on the people you
[1:13:53] don't like
[1:13:55] that's what you're doing
[1:13:59] I'm reminded of a story this is a story
[1:14:01] that my teacher taught me
[1:14:02] and he says
[1:14:05] there are two monks
[1:14:07] who are walking one day and these monks
[1:14:10] have vowed taken a vow to never touch
[1:14:14] women didn't have no interaction with
[1:14:16] women or not so these two monks are
[1:14:18] walking one day they come across a
[1:14:20] stream
[1:14:22] and there's an old lady standing at the
[1:14:24] side of the stream she's not able to
[1:14:26] cross one monk doesn't even ask any
[1:14:28] questions picks up the old lady puts her
[1:14:31] on his back crosses the river puts her
[1:14:34] down and they carry on walking
[1:14:36] they carry on walking it's been about
[1:14:37] half an hour maybe an hour
[1:14:40] and the second monk is really agitated
[1:14:42] and he says hold on hold on I need to
[1:14:44] ask you a question look right we've
[1:14:46] agreed we've taken a vow we're never
[1:14:47] going to touch women
[1:14:49] why did you pick up that old lady
[1:14:51] the first monk says
[1:14:53] I picked her up and I took it over the
[1:14:55] stream and I left her there why are you
[1:14:58] still carrying her
[1:15:01] this is what we do
[1:15:03] this is what we do
[1:15:06] we keep on to these things in our minds
[1:15:12] we need to understand people do what
[1:15:15] they're going to do
[1:15:17] the bad people
[1:15:18] they're just doing what they're going to
[1:15:20] do
[1:15:21] we can't change
[1:15:23] everything we can change our minds we
[1:15:26] see good and bad in this way life is
[1:15:28] good death is bad I get something it's
[1:15:30] good for me it's good it's not good for
[1:15:33] me then it's bad we need to start
[1:15:35] changing some of these things start
[1:15:37] walking on the line of hukum
[1:15:44] the Oneness the universe God life
[1:15:47] is going to do what it's going to do and
[1:15:50] it doesn't ask anyone's permission life
[1:15:53] doesn't need your permission life
[1:15:55] doesn't need to you to tell it what to
[1:15:57] do it's going to do it anyway
[1:15:59] you're going to have to start changing
[1:16:01] the way you interact with life
[1:16:05] we also have things like things happen
[1:16:08] for a reason
[1:16:10] that's another good one I hear that
[1:16:12] sometimes oh it's not good but there
[1:16:15] must be some good out of it what we're
[1:16:17] doing is we're saying this doesn't quite
[1:16:20] sound right I'm just going to create a
[1:16:22] new fantasy I'm just going to put a
[1:16:23] fantasy somewhere else that somehow this
[1:16:25] is going to work itself out maybe that's
[1:16:27] a good way of thinking that you're just
[1:16:29] trying to see the positive and
[1:16:30] everything
[1:16:30] or maybe that's just you not accepting
[1:16:32] reality this is definitely not good but
[1:16:34] the good is coming tomorrow
[1:16:36] everything happens for a reason maybe
[1:16:39] everything doesn't happen for a reason
[1:16:40] maybe everything just happens
[1:16:42] life just happens and the more you start
[1:16:45] to deal with the unpredictability of
[1:16:48] life and you start accepting the
[1:16:49] unpredictability of Life the more happy
[1:16:51] you're going to be this is Guru nanak's
[1:16:53] number one lesson for you the most
[1:16:55] important lesson for you forget
[1:16:57] everything else
[1:16:59] live in the acceptance of life
[1:17:02] and you will start being happier
[1:17:08] yeah if you start
[1:17:10] seeing the benefit now rather than
[1:17:12] saying there must be some benefit
[1:17:13] tomorrow otherwise you're not accepting
[1:17:15] reality
[1:17:20] one of the key lessons
[1:17:22] that you need to start understanding is
[1:17:26] I cannot change the world
[1:17:28] I cannot change others but my response
[1:17:32] is my responsibility
[1:17:34] I can choose how I choose I can choose
[1:17:37] how I respond to you
[1:17:39] I can decide how I respond to this
[1:17:41] scenario
[1:17:43] I cannot change other people I cannot
[1:17:46] change the world but my response
[1:17:49] is my responsibility
[1:17:54] so we start looking at this we've
[1:17:56] already touched upon this idea of free
[1:17:57] will already
[1:17:59] do you have free will
[1:18:01] or does everything that you do
[1:18:04] come from how you've been programmed
[1:18:07] if tomorrow
[1:18:09] you start dealing with life better
[1:18:12] it might be because of something that
[1:18:14] you've learned today
[1:18:15] not because of your free will I choose
[1:18:20] you don't actually even choose your
[1:18:22] emotions
[1:18:23] you're lucky if you have good emotions
[1:18:28] if you haven't been taught the right way
[1:18:32] to deal with life
[1:18:34] then that is something that is
[1:18:37] lacking for you
[1:18:39] and this is the word that the guru keeps
[1:18:41] going back again and again and it says
[1:18:43] actually it's your grace if I'm okay
[1:18:47] It's Your Grace I can't control my
[1:18:49] emotions if you were to show me the guru
[1:18:52] and this is where we start seeing
[1:18:54] Barney's like please show me the guru
[1:18:57] show me somebody who is a student of the
[1:18:59] guru that I may learn from them that I
[1:19:03] may bow my head to them because they've
[1:19:04] learned how to live life
[1:19:07] show me someone who can live like this
[1:19:13] but we walk around saying I'm in control
[1:19:16] of like I'm the owner of my life I'm the
[1:19:18] doer of life
[1:19:20] and when if you are the doer of life
[1:19:23] that's where your regret comes in as
[1:19:25] well because then you start blaming
[1:19:27] yourself for the stuff that you think
[1:19:29] you did
[1:19:30] let me think of a scenario in life where
[1:19:33] you've done something that you now
[1:19:35] regret
[1:19:36] any scenario in life that you think or I
[1:19:38] shouldn't have done that I wish I'd have
[1:19:40] done something different
[1:19:41] now answer this one question
[1:19:44] would you do the same thing today
[1:19:45] knowing what you know now
[1:19:48] yes or no today if you were presented
[1:19:50] with that same thing would you do the
[1:19:52] same thing that you regret before
[1:19:55] chances are you say no now that I know I
[1:19:57] wouldn't do it there you go
[1:19:59] now you know
[1:20:02] now you wouldn't do it but back then you
[1:20:05] didn't know
[1:20:06] so you did it
[1:20:08] who are you gonna blame
[1:20:10] you're gonna walk around your whole life
[1:20:12] blaming yourself for something that you
[1:20:13] didn't know
[1:20:15] how can you blame yourself
[1:20:18] let go that's another ego
[1:20:22] one of my most favorite mantras
[1:20:25] in a couple of years ago the most famous
[1:20:27] Disney movie was frozen
[1:20:29] right most famous movie
[1:20:32] what's the song from
[1:20:34] Let It Go I tell you what that's the
[1:20:37] most spiritual thing that's come out of
[1:20:38] Disney
[1:20:40] yeah if you just do the Let It Go mantra
[1:20:44] Let It Go Let It Go
[1:20:47] Let It Go
[1:20:49] at every moment Let It Go
[1:20:52] let go of my expectations
[1:20:54] hold on to reality
[1:20:56] let go of what's in your in your mind
[1:20:59] if you remember nothing you'll remember
[1:21:01] the Frozen mantra yeah Let It Go
[1:21:05] just let it go and start doing that
[1:21:10] Let It Go Let It Grow I like that one
[1:21:15] so stop blaming yourself
[1:21:18] regret self-blame
[1:21:22] is where you yourself are causing your
[1:21:25] own oppression now there's not somebody
[1:21:27] else to blame now you yourself are the
[1:21:30] person to blame and you start holding on
[1:21:32] to that
[1:21:34] how are we doing for time Folks by the
[1:21:35] way
[1:21:37] break starts in 20 minutes I'll start
[1:21:39] wrapping up and then we can start I want
[1:21:41] you guys to have time for questions are
[1:21:43] you able to change the past yes or no no
[1:21:47] then let it go
[1:21:50] look here's a very important thing I get
[1:21:53] questions all the time from people
[1:21:55] saying I can't overcome a difficult
[1:21:58] relationship I can't get over the fact
[1:22:00] that I was in this amazing relationship
[1:22:02] and he or she
[1:22:04] change their mind and walked away years
[1:22:07] later people are still walking around
[1:22:09] saying I can't get into new
[1:22:10] relationships because I'm stuck
[1:22:13] what I say to you is
[1:22:16] here is that relationship
[1:22:20] but what you're doing as time moves on
[1:22:24] is you're carrying that trauma with you
[1:22:27] all I ask you to do
[1:22:30] is just put it down
[1:22:32] as time moves on
[1:22:36] that's always going to be there that
[1:22:38] trauma is always going to be there in
[1:22:39] your life
[1:22:40] you're never going to be able to change
[1:22:42] that past
[1:22:44] but you can say something to yourself
[1:22:46] you can say
[1:22:49] I cannot change the past but I choose
[1:22:52] happiness now
[1:22:53] I don't have to live with that trauma
[1:22:56] now it happened then I don't have to
[1:22:59] live with it now
[1:23:03] I cannot change the past
[1:23:05] but I choose happiness now
[1:23:15] why is this so difficult to do folks why
[1:23:18] is this the hardest thing to do
[1:23:21] the hardest thing
[1:23:23] to do is to let go of the fantasies
[1:23:26] because your fantasies are part of your
[1:23:30] bricks
[1:23:31] they're part of your identity because
[1:23:34] you actually want to hold on to them
[1:23:38] because when you hold on to them you can
[1:23:40] say this is who I am
[1:23:43] and you like yourself
[1:23:45] and you say I quite like the way I am I
[1:23:48] want everything else to change but I
[1:23:50] don't want me to change
[1:23:52] and the guru is saying
[1:23:54] I can't do that
[1:23:56] but I can show you how you can change
[1:23:59] I can't we can't change everything folks
[1:24:01] the river can't
[1:24:03] change its flow but the fish can change
[1:24:07] its mind
[1:24:10] so
[1:24:12] do you want to hold on to your bricks
[1:24:15] that are causing you pain
[1:24:17] or is it time to start letting them go
[1:24:24] home
[1:24:26] Guru nanak says
[1:24:28] that if you get the understanding of
[1:24:32] this Hokum of the will of reality if you
[1:24:36] understand reality you no longer are
[1:24:39] concerned with the I am
[1:24:41] this is who I am I want life to go the
[1:24:44] way I want it to go
[1:24:48] nanak says if you understand the Hokum
[1:24:52] if you understand reality is going in
[1:24:54] that direction and if you understand
[1:24:56] that your happiness comes by going along
[1:24:58] with
[1:25:02] then you wouldn't talk about what you
[1:25:05] want what your fantasy is what your idea
[1:25:08] of life is
[1:25:13] so Hokum is the understanding to let go
[1:25:16] of yourself
[1:25:18] let go of yourself let go of the
[1:25:21] delusion that you can decide
[1:25:25] and it challenges us it's a bit
[1:25:27] difficult to do it challenges our sense
[1:25:30] of self I'm not sure I can do that
[1:25:32] that's that's not who I am I've always
[1:25:34] lived like this or maybe it's time to
[1:25:36] change
[1:25:37] so hukum and Homme are opposites
[1:25:41] it's either my way
[1:25:43] or it's your way the universe is way
[1:25:47] but you know what the universe has left
[1:25:49] you at this point
[1:25:51] where you've been doing stuff your own
[1:25:53] way all this time or you think it's been
[1:25:55] your way but actually the universe has
[1:25:57] programmed you to think like this maybe
[1:25:59] today is the day to change
[1:26:01] maybe today the universe is giving you a
[1:26:04] new opportunity
[1:26:06] change the way you think
[1:26:08] let go of this idea of individuality
[1:26:11] your self-control and start living
[1:26:15] as part of the bigger picture of life
[1:26:17] life is going to do what it's going to
[1:26:19] do
[1:26:25] what's one of the biggest expectations
[1:26:27] that you hold on to one of the biggest
[1:26:29] expectations hold on to is
[1:26:32] I'm going to live
[1:26:33] for a while
[1:26:35] I expect to live long
[1:26:37] the guru says have no expectations even
[1:26:40] that you're going to live to the end of
[1:26:41] this day
[1:26:44] Guru Arjun devji says
[1:26:50] first accept death
[1:26:53] if you're gonna start learning how to
[1:26:55] accept life first accept death
[1:26:59] let go of the
[1:27:02] desire to live
[1:27:06] us
[1:27:10] put yourself low
[1:27:13] humble yourself to the will of the
[1:27:15] universe and the will of everything else
[1:27:16] around you then come to the guru then
[1:27:19] you're ready to start learning what this
[1:27:21] Guru has to teach you this isn't small
[1:27:23] Mickey Mouse stuff folks this is big
[1:27:26] the guru is saying learn first to accept
[1:27:29] that I'm here to die
[1:27:33] everybody has come to die
[1:27:36] so why do you walk around thinking that
[1:27:39] death is bad
[1:27:41] you've been born to die
[1:27:46] start letting go of your will to even be
[1:27:49] alive
[1:27:50] sounds morbid sounds terrible you start
[1:27:52] telling this to the people on the street
[1:27:54] they'll say what do you mean you don't
[1:27:55] wish to die like something wrong with
[1:27:57] you say no that cause of my happiness
[1:28:00] that's the cause of your misery
[1:28:02] I am free because I have not even
[1:28:05] attached to the idea of being alive
[1:28:14] the death that everyone else is afraid
[1:28:16] of it gives my mind Anand
[1:28:23] because when I've learned to die I found
[1:28:27] Supreme Bliss who do you want to listen
[1:28:29] to folks
[1:28:31] the people who found happiness in Life
[1:28:33] or the ones who say no happiness is not
[1:28:35] possible
[1:28:37] this is what's in on offer to you
[1:28:41] a recent study has shown that over 75
[1:28:44] percent of six say that their life feels
[1:28:47] stressful or overwhelming these feelings
[1:28:50] can develop into depression alcohol
[1:28:52] abuse or even suicide we believe that
[1:28:56] Guru nanak's wisdom can help transform

[1:29:14] well-being

[1:29:20] visit nanaknam.org forward slash donate
[1:29:26] if you don't understand this then this
[1:29:29] is this is the most fundamental thing
[1:29:31] for you to understand now's your
[1:29:33] opportunity any questions that you have
[1:29:35] around a lot that we've covered today
[1:29:37] feel free to ask
[1:29:43] very important question
[1:29:45] that how do I get rid of the expectation
[1:29:48] that I'm not supposed to have any
[1:29:50] expectations because this isn't a theory
[1:29:54] this is something that you're gonna have
[1:29:56] to face at every single moment in life
[1:29:58] things are going to challenge you
[1:30:00] things are going to upset you at every
[1:30:02] moment and you're not gonna then be
[1:30:05] questioning yourself whether I'm not
[1:30:08] supposed to have an expectation you're
[1:30:10] going to have a realization oh it's
[1:30:12] because I create an expectation
[1:30:14] there was a subtle expectation here
[1:30:16] there was a subtle expectation there
[1:30:17] what I'm saying to you is don't focus on
[1:30:20] your expectations focus on a mindset of
[1:30:24] acceptance at every moment
[1:30:27] except
[1:30:29] everything
[1:30:31] at every single moment that's how you
[1:30:35] don't create expectations
[1:30:37] you create a willingness for life to do
[1:30:41] whatever it's going to do
[1:30:43] be willing for life to just flow don't
[1:30:47] worry about not creating expectations
[1:30:50] because the mind is always going to
[1:30:51] create expectations but your willingness
[1:30:54] to accept life no matter what your mind
[1:30:57] says is where your Tranquility is going
[1:30:59] to come from so don't focus on the
[1:31:01] expectations otherwise you're going to
[1:31:02] make yourself go crazy
[1:31:04] just think about accepting accept accept
[1:31:07] you know what this is where Mantra comes
[1:31:10] in
[1:31:11] you can have a mantra in your mind a
[1:31:14] mantra a life phrase that you use
[1:31:17] imagine the life phrase that you said at
[1:31:20] every moment is this is your grace
[1:31:23] I see everything as a gift this is your
[1:31:25] gift this moment is your grace this
[1:31:28] moment is your grace this moment is your
[1:31:30] grace
[1:31:33] in gurbani we could say
[1:31:37] at every moment oh so you walk outside
[1:31:39] it's raining you go to the break and
[1:31:42] you're expecting that there's coffee
[1:31:43] there's no coffee there's no biscuits
[1:31:47] create month this is how Mantra starts
[1:31:49] to work it starts to override our
[1:31:51] thinking one more Mike over here please
[1:32:00] what I'm saying is that these are levels
[1:32:04] the amount of
[1:32:06] expectations you have
[1:32:09] can be reduced sometimes you can't get
[1:32:11] rid of all expectations
[1:32:13] so you can have sometimes a little bit
[1:32:16] of expectations and still kind of mainly
[1:32:19] flow in reality but there's a little bit
[1:32:20] of expectation that's why you're a
[1:32:21] little bit upset so the amount of
[1:32:24] expectation that you reduce is going to
[1:32:26] increase your happiness or decide
[1:32:28] whether there's a little bit of sadness
[1:32:30] inside you so it's almost a proportional
[1:32:34] the more expectation there is the more
[1:32:37] sadness there will be when reality does
[1:32:40] something else the more reality deviates
[1:32:43] let's put it in a different way
[1:32:45] let's put it in a different way in terms
[1:32:48] of time or in terms of events this is
[1:32:51] where you create a moment of expectation
[1:32:55] life
[1:32:57] or the reality scale starts moving and
[1:33:00] moving and moving and moving the more
[1:33:02] reality
[1:33:04] deviates from your expectation the more
[1:33:08] unhappy you're going to be because your
[1:33:10] expectation is here so if reality meets
[1:33:13] your expectation your happiness is here
[1:33:15] the more reality deviates from your
[1:33:18] expectation let me try that again
[1:33:20] because I some folks at the back can't
[1:33:22] see it you create an expectation here
[1:33:24] and you say that if this happens
[1:33:27] I'm Gonna Be Happy
[1:33:28] the more reality deviates from your
[1:33:33] expectation the more sad you're going to
[1:33:36] be because you placed your happiness
[1:33:40] with this expectation
[1:33:43] you placed your happiness there if
[1:33:46] reality went this way then it's okay
[1:33:49] you're gonna be happy but it works the
[1:33:51] other way as well
[1:33:54] so if you play the lottery you generally
[1:33:57] have very low expectations yeah
[1:34:01] if you lose it's okay because you don't
[1:34:04] have a lot of expectations yeah
[1:34:07] but if you win 10 pounds you feel a
[1:34:10] little bit happy
[1:34:11] if you win a million pounds you feel a
[1:34:14] lot happier
[1:34:16] but because you didn't create any
[1:34:18] expectations but imagine you created a
[1:34:21] lot of expectation that says I am going
[1:34:23] to win the lottery the more what if you
[1:34:26] started to lose money what if you
[1:34:28] invested in the business and you said
[1:34:30] I'm going to be happy because this
[1:34:31] business is going to work the more
[1:34:32] reality starts to go in a particular way
[1:34:34] you've placed your happiness there what
[1:34:36] Guru nanak is saying is don't place your
[1:34:39] happiness there place your happiness
[1:34:41] here
[1:34:42] that no matter where reality goes your
[1:34:45] happiness is here because reality
[1:34:46] doesn't even go in a straight line focus
[1:34:48] it goes all over the place
[1:34:54] that's a really good question
[1:34:56] can I choose happiness now the question
[1:34:58] is if you could actually choose
[1:35:00] happiness now you would have chosen it
[1:35:01] at every moment of your life you can't
[1:35:04] actually choose happiness you have to
[1:35:06] have reprogrammed your mind in order for
[1:35:09] your mind to give happiness
[1:35:11] as your response
[1:35:13] the guru and this wisdom if you spend a
[1:35:17] lot of time with this wisdom every day
[1:35:18] drumming this wisdom into your mind it
[1:35:20] will give you a new choice of happiness
[1:35:23] every day
[1:35:24] but the reality is I've misled you
[1:35:27] because I've told you you can choose
[1:35:29] happiness but you can't
[1:35:32] if you could choose happiness you would
[1:35:34] have chosen it by now
[1:35:36] but your programming meant that you
[1:35:38] couldn't choose happening you chose the
[1:35:40] wrong reaction every time it's the
[1:35:42] guru's wisdom that if you plant that
[1:35:45] wisdom in your mind every day I need to
[1:35:47] learn this
[1:35:48] then you will start giving yourself a
[1:35:51] new
[1:35:52] response
[1:35:57] is it a choice that you make that you
[1:35:59] turned up here today
[1:36:02] I would say yes isn't it I knew you're
[1:36:04] going to say that but you you it isn't a
[1:36:07] choice that you turned up here today
[1:36:09] it's your programming that you turned up
[1:36:11] here today
[1:36:12] you turned up here because of whatever
[1:36:14] has happened in your life and you saw a
[1:36:16] message and uh idea a firework went off
[1:36:20] in your head that said
[1:36:21] oh I think I'll I think I'll go to that
[1:36:24] yeah an idea popped into your head said
[1:36:26] sounds good I'm available I can go to
[1:36:28] that yeah
[1:36:30] did you choose that response
[1:36:33] or did the idea pop into your head
[1:36:35] because the same event could have come a
[1:36:37] week later and the idea that the the
[1:36:39] answer there would have popped into your
[1:36:40] head would have said no that's not for
[1:36:43] me
[1:36:44] or it could have happened a year later
[1:36:46] or a year earlier when you weren't in
[1:36:48] the situation that you're in now and you
[1:36:50] would have looked at this event and you
[1:36:51] would have said nope not for me
[1:36:54] did you choose or did your mind just
[1:36:57] happen to give the only answer it could
[1:36:59] have given at that moment in time
[1:37:02] could you have had a choice to not come
[1:37:04] here today ask yourself that question
[1:37:07] I don't think you could have had a
[1:37:08] choice to not come here today because if
[1:37:11] you could have made that choice you
[1:37:13] would have sat there should I shouldn't
[1:37:14] I should I shouldn't I and even if you
[1:37:16] did the final answer that came out
[1:37:20] is the answer that was the only answer
[1:37:22] that could have come out
[1:37:24] and you know what this scares the hell
[1:37:27] out of us because we think what I have
[1:37:30] no control like I don't make my thoughts
[1:37:32] I don't do these kind of things I I
[1:37:34] agree this takes some time this takes
[1:37:36] some time to to work out because we've
[1:37:38] lived our whole life thing what do you
[1:37:39] mean I do make choices all the time look
[1:37:42] let's not get into a philosophical
[1:37:43] debate debate because I don't really
[1:37:45] care whether or not you have free will
[1:37:46] or not what I really care about is your
[1:37:50] circumstances and your ability to deal
[1:37:52] with them if you like to think that you
[1:37:54] have free will
[1:37:55] make the right choices and and have the
[1:37:57] right responses
[1:37:59] I know
[1:38:01] from my own understanding from my
[1:38:04] experience
[1:38:05] that there is no free will
[1:38:08] because Free Will means that I am
[1:38:11] independent from the universe and I will
[1:38:13] do what I want what I'm saying to you is
[1:38:16] you are never independent from the
[1:38:17] universe the wave is never independent
[1:38:19] from the ocean the wave can never be
[1:38:21] free from the ocean that is what Oneness
[1:38:23] means
[1:38:25] and every idea that pops into your head
[1:38:27] is not a free idea it's an idea that
[1:38:30] pops into your head as the only idea
[1:38:32] that could have popped into your head at
[1:38:33] that moment in time
[1:38:36] every choice that you've made until this
[1:38:39] moment is the only choice that could
[1:38:41] have been made which is why you can't
[1:38:43] blame yourself for the past because you
[1:38:45] wouldn't do it now
[1:38:46] you didn't choose that even though it
[1:38:49] felt like a choice like I I had a choice
[1:38:51] that I could have done done this so that
[1:38:53] I chose this and it turned out to be the
[1:38:56] wrong decision and I'm living with it
[1:38:57] with the regret of that the question is
[1:38:58] why did you choose that at that moment
[1:39:01] in time that was the only logical choice
[1:39:03] that you could have made foreign
